Day 4 was an action-packed rollercoaster of grit, laughter, learning, and a little bit of magic. It all kicked off with the 35th Annual Sandpit Slalom Championships—a legendary event here at camp! The course? A gnarly, 110-foot vertical drop peppered with 17 gates and plenty of slick, gritty sand to keep things interesting.
After three practice runs to fine-tune their lines and technique, it was go time! Campers raced head-to-head, pushing their limits (and their balance!) as they charged down the course. Wipeouts? Oh yes—just about everyone took at least one spill. But the energy stayed high and the encouragement from teammates was nonstop.
Coaches and counselors were right there in the thick of it—running, cheering, and keeping the stoke high. Counselor Henry racked up 16 runs himself and was completely spent by the end. After a final UPHILL sprint (yes, uphill), it was time to rinse off in the pond and refuel with a lunch worthy of champions: Mac & Cheese. Carbo-loading success!
Post-lunch brought a shift in gears with another engaging Notebook session, led by Coach Doug. The topic? Emotions—how to “Name it to Tame it.” Campers dove into a conversation about how emotions show up in the body, how long they last, and most importantly, how to respond to them rather than react. It was a thoughtful, meaningful session, and the campers really brought their voices and insights to the table.
The afternoon brought a mix of physical testing (on already-tired legs!), partner yoga, boxing, and stretching—a blend of movement and mindfulness to round out the day.
Then came the fun twist: Dress-Up Dinner Night! Outfits got wild, creativity soared, and spirits stayed high. Dessert was a hit—ice cream with all the toppings, plus our famous Shred It Up muffins. That rolled right into an epic dance party and the ever-competitive Limbo Contest, where Eva and Will stole the show and went super low to take the crown.
To wrap it all up? Movie Night with a camp favorite: Miracle. A perfect way to wind down after a non-stop day. And when the lights went out… silence. The campers were out.
Here’s what some of the boys had to say about the day:
Describe the Sandpit SL and the key to going fast? Why?
- Geoffrey: The Sandpit SL was super fun and rocky. The key was to have quick feet and go full send.
- Ian B: The key to going fast is getting close to the gate. The sandpit SL is very rocky and sandy, the sand is also very loose.
- Mac M: The key to going fast is Sand pit SL was getting a high line because the sand will drag you down.
- Markus F: The sand falls away when you touch it and everything is a blur. The key is finding the little pocket of speed and taking it.
- Ollie B: You need to jump and not run. It was fun!
- Jake V: Tall, steep and rutted. The key is jumping in between the turns.
- Topher B: The key of Sandpit SL is to have a tight line. It was very long and hard.
